I have been a teacher for most of my adult life. I have more than 20 years experience. I know my job, but I am not a digital native. I bought my first computer at the age of 22 and I needed a loan. My phones were attached to the wall and my movies came from Blockbuster. At least once a day, I yell “Tech support,” and my husband or teen must assist me.

You might understand why remote teaching is not on my bucket list. Half the teachers in NC are in the same boat with me. We can do this, but it is hard. It is not ideal. Seven and eight and twelve year olds don’t necessarily learn best taking virtual classes.

On the other hand, I don’t want to get sick. I don’t want to bring sickness home to my household. I don’t look forward to constantly checking to see if every student’s mask is on. I’m going to wish we had a nurse in our building every day.

I’m glad I don’t make the decisions. Right now there are no good options.
